STEP 1: PREP, PREP, PREP!

First, prep your piece of furniture. Unfortunately, you can’t just slap on a coat of paint and boom, you’re finished. Without proper prep, the paint will peel and chip and it simply will not last. The first thing to do before painting a piece of furniture, especially if it’s been sitting around in a dusty garage or storage space, is to give it a good clean with some furniture-safe soap. It can be a good idea to remove all the drawers/pieces before painting them and work on those separately.

STEP 2: SAND

Next, sand your furniture piece so that the paint will have a good surface to grab onto. We recommend medium-grit sandpaper, as you don’t need to strip the finish or sand it down to the bare wood. Simply removing the glossy finish will work great.

STEP 3: PRIME

Once your furniture is dry and clean, it’s time to paint on some primer. This helps your paint latch on to the piece better and it will also cover stains or discolorations in the wood. Use our APCO Primer for best results.

STEP 4: SAND AGAIN

Then, sand again! This time, using a fine-grit sandpaper, lightly sand your piece between each coat of paint. This helps you attain a flawless, professional and even finish Just be sure to wipe off the dust between each coat!

STEP 5: PAINT

Now that you have your piece primed and ready, it’s time to paint. Yay! Pick an APCO trim paint colour, and we recommend using a small foam roller on the main parts of the furniture and a brush in the hard to reach crevices. The roller helps prevent visible brush strokes and creates an even finish.
